Our card for this week is Self-Esteem from The Soul’s Journey Lesson Cards by James Van Praagh.
We are being encouraged to take some time to look at ourselves and appreciate the positive things we find.
It is incredibly easy to get caught up in the comparison game. Many times we measure ourselves and our abilities in very human ways. We look at the people around us. We see their successes and failures, and we quickly begin to evaluate how we stack up next to them.
It reminds me of the way we used to measure ourselves as children. Perhaps Mom or Grandma has a special “measuring wall” in their home. That place where each of the kids would put heels and backs against the wall and stretch their necks as high as they could. A book would be placed on their head and a mark made on the wall with the date and name of the measured individual. Now here’s the fun part, while we did wonder if we would ever get as tall as the adults who had already finished their growing, we rarely compared ourselves to the heights of others in ways that made us feel deficient...or bad at growing. What we were really interested in was how much we had grown since the last mark with our name was placed on the wall. We had not been “trying” to get taller. We probably had not given it much thought at all. But growth had happened in spite of us.
There is a beautiful lesson here. When we determine the value of our growth or giftedness against the measure of another, we block our ability to live to our potential. We limit our ability to express the giftedness we possess in our own life and in the lives of others.
Healthy self-esteem is the place where we are able to recognize our value and celebrate our worth wherever we find ourselves each day. From this perspective, we are able to explore the life we are here living and the gifts of soul we came to share with the world.
We are each unique, relevant and priceless. If there is a measurement to take, it is an individual one which compares our yesterday to our today. We can then take pride in the growth we see, and we are able to adjust things as necessary to bring about the changes we need to make.
May we appreciate the incredible value of each individual.
May we recognize the unique gifts and abilities we possess.
And may we enjoy bringing them out into the light to be shared with others in need.
Bright Blessings for a Beautiful Week!
